The Popular Entertainments Working Group will be meeting again during the next conference of the International Federation for Theatre Research, at the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, 10-14 July 2017, and invites proposals from scholars and scholar-practitioners.

The theme of the conference is “Unstable Geographies, Multiple Theatricalities.” Within the broad field of popular entertainment studies this theme points to the ways that many popular entertainments have been transmitted around the globe, negotiating geo-political borders and language barriers, adjusting to suit changing social, economic, and cultural contexts. The conference theme also invokes the ‘multiple theatricalities’ that Working Group members have brought to light and explored through research presented at previous annual meetings. In recent years, these topics have included animals, burlesque, cabaret, celebrity, children, circus, clowning, comedy, cross-dressing, dance, festival, harlequinade, horror, minstrels, music hall, nightclubs, pantomime, revue, spectacle, sport, thriller, tourism, training, variety, vaudeville, wrestling and so on.

The Popular Entertainments Working Group invites papers that either engage with the conference theme, or that explore areas of ongoing interest in the study of popular entertainments. We particularly welcome papers from emerging researchers and those joining the Working Group for the first time.

 

Group Meetings

The Popular Entertainments Working Group operates by circulating members’ draft papers in advance of the conference, enabling a more focused discussion. Once papers are circulated, members are then asked to nominate another paper they’d like to moderate. The group allocates approximately twenty minutes for discussion of each paper. Members are asked to speak about their research for ten minutes; visual or AV material that amplifies or supports their paper in some way is encouraged. (As all papers are read in advance, presenters are not required to provide an oral summary of their paper.) The moderator previously assigned to the paper will then lead the remaining ten minutes of discussion.

Occasional attendees and members who are not presenting are welcome to participate.

 

Submission of Abstracts

Abstracts of 250-300 words should be submitted no later than Saturday, 15 January 2017. Please specify ‘Popular Entertainments’ working group when submitting your abstract.

 

Notice of acceptance will be communicated by the middle of February 2017.

 

The full text of participants’ papers (no more than 5000 words) should be emailed to the convenors as a Word attachment by 10 June 2017. Papers will then be distributed to members of the group for reading and a discussant will be allocated to each.
