IFTR Conference, Shanghai Theatre Academy, 8-12 July 2019
We would like to invite researchers to submit their abstracts to the Political Performances Working Group at the 2019 IFTR conference, which will take place on 8-12 July in Shanghai, China. The theme for the 2019 conference is Theatre, Performance, and Urbanism. We have identified three loose strands that reflect the recent work of many researchers in the wider field of political performances, but that also align with the 2019 conference theme. The Political Performances Working Group therefore invites proposals for papers on the following topics:
(A) Citizenship
political theatre & political performance regarding the polis, citizens & aliens, naturalisation, local/regional/national identity, hybridity, participation, cultural democracy, homelessness, economic in/activity, community, 'active citizenship', global citizenship, citizenship and policy, 'right to the city'; political dramaturgies emerging from these/related issues.
(B) Urbanism
political theatre & political performance regarding urban development, redevelopment, gentrification, social housing, sustainability, rewilding cities, (re)mapping, public spaces, public sphere, pedestrian performance, smart cities, surveillance, municipalism, ruination, future-proofing, utopian spaces, space as politicised social practice, cities & cultural policies; political dramaturgies emerging from these/related issue.
(C) Mobility
political theatre & political performance in relation to drifting, touring, rural theatre, regional theatre, (decentred) national theatres, franchise models, audience development, migratory flows, cross-country/ international exchanges, border control, the politics of urban/rural rhythms; political dramaturgies emerging from these/related issues.
NB: The group welcomes research not only on contemporary political theatre, political performance and performative activism, but also on historical political theatre and performance, and diachronic research.
Process
Accepted speakers will be asked to send convenors a draft of their work no later than Monday, 10 June 2019, so that drafts can be pre-circulated among Working Group members attending our meeting in Shanghai well in advance. At the Working Group sessions, presenters will be will be invited to frame the work they shared for strictly 5 minutes. This will be followed by 15-20 minutes of dedicated responses and discussion by the group. The expectation is that the group's engagement with drafts prior to the conference will generate more attentive, focused and deeper discussions about each contribution.

The Political Performances Working Group welcomes new members and is keen to hear from academics across all career stages and geographical locations.
