CALL FOR PAPERS:
Music Theatre Working Group, International Federation for Theatre Research
IFTR ACCRA 2023: Myths, Myth Making and Performance
Conference Dates: 24—28 July 2023, The University of Ghana
Deadline for Submission of Abstracts: January 31st, 2023
The IFTR Music Theatre Working Group will be meeting at the IFTR 2023 Accra, Ghana, 24 to 28 July 2023.
The aim of the Music Theatre working group is to discuss a broad range of methodological and theoretical perspectives on all kinds of music theatre, from opera and musicals to contemporary experiments with new forms of music theatre. We are also interested in comprehending the role and function of music, sound, and movement in performance, in the broadest sense. The group brings together theatre scholars, musicologists, choreographers, and performers, as well as researchers from other disciplines. What our approaches all have in common is that they start from a notion of music theatre as theatre, performance and experience, always dealing with the interplay of sight, sound, and the body.
We invite existing and new WG members to submit papers on any aspect of music theatre, broadly conceived, or music and sound in performance, or the consideration of movement and dance in music theatre.
This year, we particularly welcome papers that consider diverse forms of music theatre, or music and sound in performance, on the African continent. We also invite papers focusing on intercultural relations and cultural diplomacies performed through music theatre between African nations and other parts of the world. In keeping with the conference theme, we are also interested in a broad exploration of the relationships between music theatre and myth making.
The Music Theatre WG is committed to an open and inclusive discussion of a broad range of topics in various stages of development, including work in progress. We particularly encourage graduate students and early career scholars to share their work.
Submission Procedures & Presentation Format
We welcome both new and existing WG members to join the WG sessions at the conference. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and are due 31 January 2023.
All abstract submissions are made through the Cambridge Core website: https://www.cambridge.org/core/membership/iftr/. However, you can send your abstract to the convenors beforehand to get an informal indication of acceptance. Please note that in order to make a submission through the Cambridge Core website you will need to become a member of IFTR. Make sure to indicate that you are submitting an abstract to the Music Theatre Working Group.
As the WG would like to use the conference sessions for in-depth discussions, papers will be circulated prior to the conference. Finalized papers are to be submitted by email to the convenors before 13 July 2023. Papers should be no more than 3,000 words.
At the WG meetings during the conference, only a short overview of each paper will be presented and the remaining time will be devoted to discussion.
