Intermediality in Theatre & Performance

Working Group

IFTR/FIRT International Federation for Theatre Research Conference

University of Stockholm

 13-17 June 2016

The Intermediality in Theatre and Performance Working Group examines the interrelationships of theatre with other media as well as combinations of different media in performance. It looks at theories and conceptualizations of media in live performance, historical developments and transformations of media, and contemporary manifestations of intermediality. The group members work in diverse areas and within different methodologies but share a focus on the self-reflexivity of media, an interest in media applications and functions in culture and society, as well as an understanding of theatre practice as an object and method of research.

1. In response to the theme of the Stockholm conference in 2016, “Presenting the Theatrical Past,” we propose the following questions:
 
·      Digital archives and performance practice, relationships between memory and media
·      Genealogies and historiographies of media
·      Remediation and digital revolution, new media versus old media
·      Artifacts and materialities of media
·      Traditional and innovative uses of media and theatre
·      Digital media and the crisis of “Liveness”
·      History, politics, and media in performance
The list is not exhaustive, and we are encouraging other topics that address intermediality, even if they do not directly refer to the conference theme.

2. With the Scenography Working Group, we propose a joint panel on analogue and digital media in performance, and we would like to encourage contributions across intermediality and scenography. This panel will be proposed as General Panel for the conference.

“Staging the Intermedial Past: Intersections Between Scenography and Intermediality"
 
Proposals may wish to address (but are not limited to):

• ways in which historical performances can be seen as intermedial events or as located within an intermedial context: early photography, cinema, radio and television used within live events, print media and performance
• scenographic returns to the analogue: traditional, ‘analogue’ materials and techniques used in new ways, blended digital and analogue scenography, digital realisations of traditional techniques
• digital strategies in the re-presentation of historical performance: online resources and artifacts, archives, 3D visualisation, virtual realities and blended realities
• the history of inter- and multi-medial performance
• any other proposal that addresses the panel theme of intermediality, scenography and presenting the theatrical past.

 SUBMISSION
 
The deadline for submission is 15 January 2016. Please submit an abstract of max 300 words along with a bio of max 50 words. If you want to apply for bursaries, the deadline is 1 December 2015. The application form will be available at www.iftr.org by the 30 September. Abstracts must be submitted via the conference page: www.iftr.org/conferencePlease note that you need to be a current IFTR/FIRT member in order to submit an abstract. ACCEPTANCE
 
Applicants will be informed of acceptance by late February 2016.
 
Format of Conference sessions
 
The co-conveners will arrange proposals into panels of papers on connected topics. We invite 20-minute presentations in any format. We are keen on encouraging a lively discussion during the sessions. We also invite observers to our sessions and we appreciate their contribution to the discussions.
 
The group is welcoming and inclusive. We will organize drinks/ dinner during the conference for the members of the group.
