CFPs: The 10th International Conference of Young Researchers in Theatre Studies (CIJIET) and 3rd TEATRALES Conference

Call for Papers

The 10th International Conference of Young Researchers in Theatre Studies (CIJIET) and the 3rd TEATRALES Conference will take place from November 3^rd to 5^th, 2025 at the University of Oviedo, in collaboration with the Department of English, French, and German Philology (University of Oviedo) and the research group INTERSECTIONS (Literatures, Cultures, and Contemporary Theories). CIJIET and TEATRALES will be held jointly, with no distinction between sessions and with shared participants.

The primary objective of CIJIET is to build a community around Theatre Studies and promote dialogue among young researchers in this field, guided by the principle that scientific work should be constructed through shared knowledge.

On the other hand, TEATRALES was created to establish a scientific forum that welcomes a variety of research on Theatre Studies by scholars at different career stages. The upcoming gathering will continue developing such an academic network aimed at supporting research in this field.

One of the main goals of these joint conferences is to foster exchanges between Theatre Studies researchers from different generations and career stages. The event will include plenary lectures, roundtables, performative presentations and discussions, as well as the opportunity to attend live performances, which will be announced in the conference program.

Thus, for this 10th CIJIET / 3rd TEATRALES conference, we invite submissions in three categories:

Individual presentations, Thematic panels and Performative presentations. These should align with the following research lines:

-       Staging and (re)presentation: Studies on acting, the evolution of staging, and research through artistic practice, as well as those related to stage space, music, sound design, material and labor conditions in theatre, and other elements of staging.

-       Dramatic text and textualities: Research focused on dramatic poetics, dramaturgy, adaptations, versions, translations, or any other aspect that places text and language at the center of theatre practice.

-       Performance Studies and Live Arts: Studies on creations that explore the possibilities of live performance and operate within, between, or beyond traditional artistic forms, such as action arts, public space interventions, new dramaturgies, street theatre and dance, or the genre of performance.

-       Physical theatre: Studies on artistic languages and disciplines that emphasize the expressive role of the body as the core of creation, including dance, physical theatre, and circus arts.

-       Performing arts and cultural studies: Research framed within disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, pedagogy, historiography, and reception studies of live arts, as well as studies that explore the influence of queer theories, gender studies, feminism, and postcolonialism on the performing arts.

-       Solidarity, activism, and theatre: This theme explores how performing arts—theatre, dance, performance—foster social and political activism, particularly in terms of solidarity among diverse communities. We invite studies on productions addressing social justice, human rights, gender equality, or climate justice, and how theatre can raise awareness and promote political responsibility and critical reflection in audiences, fostering potential social change.

-       Decolonial theatre, resistance, and reappropriation: This theme focuses on decolonial theatre as a tool for cultural resistance, historical reappropriation, and identity construction. Decolonial theatre challenges narratives, aesthetics, and conventions imposed by colonialism, seeking to dismantle cultural hierarchies that have marginalized non-Western voices, worldviews, and performance traditions. This section aims to highlight theatrical productions and creative processes that, from a decolonial perspective, challenge cultural hegemony and promote a greater diversity of expressions in contemporary theatre.

Submission Guidelines

Individual Presentations

The presentations will have a maximum duration of 20 minutes. Interested participants must submit their proposal by May 15, 2025, through the following form.

Thematic Panels

Panels will consist of 3 to 5 participants, including the panel coordinator(s), who will submit the proposal to the Organizing Committee. Panels will bring together proposals on specific and relevant topics in the field of Theatre Studies today. The panel coordination team will determine the theme and structure (presentations or round table).

Panels will have a maximum duration of 90 minutes, including the subsequent discussion. Interested participants must submit their proposal by May 15, 2025, through the following form.

Performative Presentations

Performative presentations aim to promote new models of academic reflection and dissemination within the field of Theatre Studies, integrating both practice and theoretical analysis. Each presentation will have a maximum duration of 20 minutes. Technical requirements should be minimal and will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee. Presentations can be individual or collective but must not exceed the designated time limit.

Interested participants must submit their proposal by May 15, 2025, through the following form.

Submissions will be positively evaluated if accompanied by a teaser video (max. 1 minute) showcasing aspects of the performative presentation, a previous work sample, aesthetic references, or a detailed preliminary outline.

Panels, individual presentations, and performative presentations may be conducted in Spanish, English, or Asturian.

Acceptance Notification

Participation in the congress requires a registration fee of €65, which includes one-year membership to Teatrales.
