The IFTR Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy (TAD) Working Group will be meeting at the IFTR conference in Manila, Philippines, 15-19 July, 2024 and we call for papers.

 The IFTR Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy (TAD) Working Group will be meeting at the IFTR conference in Manila, Philippines, 15-19 July, 2024 and we call for papers.

In response to the theme of the Manila 2024 conference – Our States of Emergency: Theatres and Performances of Tragedy– the TAD working group proposes the following specific topics (including any intersections or combinations therein):

• Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy and Post/de/colonialism related to trauma, and/or tragedy
• Translation, Adaptation, Dramaturgy and the ideas of trauma centered texts
• Translation, Adaptation, Dramaturgy, and tragedies in cross-cultural contexts
• Practices of Translation, Adaptation and Dramaturgy that arise from trauma, states of emergency, and/ortragedy
• Translation, Adaptation, Dramaturgy and Activism in our states of emergency
• Dramaturgies that challenge the traditional forms of tragedy
• Dramaturgies that lead to the caring for and healing from trauma
• Translation, Adaptation, Dramaturgy in remembering our pasts
• Relationships between dramaturgical and decolonial thinking

 *   Open call: We encourage other submissions that address translation, adaptation, and dramaturgy, including those that do not directly refer to the conference theme.

FORMAT OF CONFERENCE SESSIONS:

The co-conveners will arrange abstracts into panels grouped by connected topics. Papers (up to 3000 words) are pre-circulated four weeks before the conference, followed by brief (up to 10 minutes) verbal presentations at the conference to ensure time for discussion and exchange. We are open to proposals featuring other presentation formats that fit the allocated timeframe.

WG members currently have a book project underway on politics of translation adaptation and dramaturgy but are open to starting new collaborative projects too.

SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT:

We welcome both existing and new WG members to submit papers on any aspect of translation, adaptation and dramaturgy. We are keen to hear from academics and researchers at all career stages and welcome attendees from diverse geographical locations. The WG aims to encourage lively and energized debates during the sessions and in this spirit, we also invite observers to attend and contribute to our discussions. The group is welcoming and inclusive and we will be organizing a social event for all of our WG members during the week of the conference.

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and are due 2 February, 2024.
