The conference investigates the complexity of exchange and responsiveness in theater within the context of theoretical gift discourses. Theatrical performances could be seen as gifts to the audience. As an event, theater combines social actions and artistic autonomy, is both exchange and gift at the same time. The invited experts will discuss their different research approaches from art and cultural studies, theater, literature and media theories, social philosophy, sociology and economic anthropology to contribute to a theory of theater which takes into consideration the interweaving of aesthetic and social practices By clarifying current research questions, a contribution is also made to the development of the theory of gifts with regard to aesthetic phenomena.
