2013/14 IFTR Prizes

The IFTR runs two annual essay competitions for the New Scholars' Prize and Helsinki Prize. There is no set theme for these competitions; rather, candidates are encouraged to submit work drawing on their current research. Only new scholars are eligible to apply for the New Scholars' Prize and the Helsinki Prize. The Federation defines a new scholar as a graduate student or post-doctoral researcher whose PhD has been completed less than three years ago, or a researcher without a PhD who has been in an academic post for less than three years. Membership of IFTR is not necessary to enter the competition, but prize winners will need to join the Federation to attend the conference or receive mentoring.

Please Note: Submitting an entry for either competition does not constitute a conference enrolment. Applicants wanting to attend the conference should send abstracts to the organisers as outlined in the conference call for papers <http://iftr2014warwick.org>.

Results of the competitions will be announced in the first week of February 2014. The prize-winners are expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements, and will be reimbursed (via a bank account) upon submission of receipts to the IFTR Treasurer.

Application deadline for the New Scholars' Prize and Helsinki Prize is 1 December 2013 (23:59 GMT).

New Scholars' Prize 2013/14

The New Scholars' Prize is awarded to the best essay, judged on originality, coherence and rigour. The 2013/14 New Scholars' Prize may be awarded to up to 3 individuals who are adjudged as having the best essays. Essays may be submitted in English or French, but must not exceed 4000 words (excluding bibliography) and should not be published or submitted for publication in advance of the award announcement. All submissions should be carefully presented and referenced, and must be accompanied by a cover sheet, which can be downloaded by visiting <http://www.firt-iftr.org/prizes> and clicking on the relevant link. Send entries, preferably in Word format, to the Chair of the Prizes' Committee, Dr Kene Igweonu at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK (kene.igweonu@canterbury.ac.uk)

The prize would enable the winner(s) to attend the 2014 IFTR conference at the University of Warwick, UK by covering the costs of conference registration, economy travel expenses, and student accommodation (or equivalent) for the duration of the conference. Helsinki Prize 2012/13

The Helsinki Prize was founded by the student Congress Team of the 2006 IFTR World Congress in Helsinki. Since 2011, it has been offered annually by IFTR to a promising new scholar who may be a postgraduate or lecturer at any university, but whose country of origin and of first degree-level studies is in Africa, Asia, South America or the Middle East, and who wishes to participate in an IFTR conference for the first time. The prize is awarded on the basis of academic merit and strives to promote the exchange and networking of new scholars in developing regions, and to encourage research in the field of theatre in their countries.

Submissions for the Helsinki Prize should include a scholarly essay of 4000 words maximum (in English or French), the applicant's curriculum vitae, and a letter of recommendation by his/her supervisor or academic mentor. Entries must be accompanied by a cover sheet, which can be downloaded by visiting <http://www.firt-iftr.org/prizes> and clicking on the relevant link. Send all documents electronically, preferably in Word format, to the Chair of the Prizes' Committee, Dr Kene Igweonu at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK (kene.igweonu@canterbury.ac.uk)
