He earned his B.A. there and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia.  Specializing in Shakespeare, he wrote Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor (Princeton: 1962) and edited the play (Signet, 1965), providing its stage history. Among his other publications were articles on the plays for the Reader’s Encyclopedia of World Drama, ed. John Gassner and Edward Quinn (1969; reprint 2002), and he contributed to the Cambridge Guide to World Theatre, ed. by Martin Banham (1988), winner of the 1989 Barnard Hewitt award.  He also wrote on Broadway musicals and popular entertainment.
