Dramaturgy of Verse: Performing Verse in Contemporary Theatre: First book on performing verse across different languages, cultures, and media

Dramaturgy of Verse: Performing Verse in Contemporary Theatre examines verse in twenty-first-century theatre practice across different languages, cultures, and media.

Dramaturgy of Verse examines verse in twenty-first-century theatre practice across different languages, cultures, and media. Through interdisciplinary engagement with works created by Irish, Spanish, Nigerian, American, Polish, Russian, Canadian, Australian, British, and multinational artists, the book offers a new method for verse analysis in the performance context.

The book’s main argument is that verse is heteroglossic – built on a dialogical interaction between often contradicting viewpoints – which has dramaturgical consequences, particularly suited for contemporary theatre practice.  The case studies reflect on verse dramaturgy in theatre translation and adaptation, political theatre, and new theatre forms. Their arrangement reflects the history of verse in theatre: while white male playwrights dominate initial case studies, the marginalized voices – including female, Black, and queer voices – gradually claim their artistic agency. The book will also appeal to theatre-makers, scholars, and students working with classical and contemporary verse and poetry in performance contexts; practitioners and academics of aural and oral dramaturgies; voice and verse-speaking coaches; and actors seeking the creative opportunities that verse offers. It will also be interesting to those exploring the relationship between content and form in contemporary theatre, transmedia, and film.
